How many of us tend to begin our New Year with the cliché statement, “New Year new me”? I know I am guilty of using this phrase as a foundation to set up somewhat unrealistic goals and expectations for the next twelve months. However, as the clock stroke twelve on January 1st 2018 I vowed to embody and affirm a new phrase and overall outlook for the year ahead, “2018 New Year, same me just better”! One of the ways in which I intended to do this was to primarily focus on finding balance in most if not all areas of my life.

Finding balance in the fundamental areas of our lives is an effective way of nurturing and protecting our inner abilities. More often than not we find ourselves putting all of our energy into one specific area whilst neglecting the others. Think of it like a school project, if we put all of our effort, knowledge, and research into the introduction but fail to leave anything for the main body and conclusion – the overall project will not only loose marks but it will also lack substance.

In most cases our every day experiences and activities can be divided into 2 main areas in accordance to balance, these are the internal and external aspects. When we speak about internal balance we are talking about our mind, heart, and health; whilst the external aspects include, career and work, social life, relationships, and fun. June’s balance wheel is an example of how to gain balance in both internal and external areas of our lives.

If you are unsure about how to identify exactly when you are out of balance below are examples of behaviours which represent different ends of each spectrum. Neither is more positive or negative than the other, the main learning comes from finding an equilibrium between the two.

Pushing yourself to be the best and challenging your thoughts process against relaxing and taking time out.

Giving an abundance of love, affection, and emotion against receiving an abundance of love, affection, and emotion

Obtaining a healthy lifestyle and diet against enjoying the luxury of different food types

Career & Work

Working hard to achieve career goals against taking time out to reflect and appreciate what has already been achieved.

Social life

Going out and being social against staying indoors and spending time with self.

Being physically and emotionally available to loved ones against creating and communicating boundaries clearly

Engaging in activities which excite you and make you happy against making time to focus on other important areas of your life

On JC Wellness we focus on the act of balance using 4 main areas, these include:

Mental – Think

Emotional – Feel

Spiritual – Believe

Physical – Act

Once you are aware of what needs to be done you will then be able to go through the motions of feeling and believing in your goals before physically acting on the required work.

Balance Tips and Techniques

If this is all new to you start by taking small steps to creating a more balanced lifestyle. Below are 4 tips which you may find beneficial when beginning…

  1. Switching off your phone – detaching yourself from your mobile device (or any technology) will allow you to feel and become more present. In addition, you will be able to interact more with friends and family with limited distractions.
  2. De-clutter – The beginning of the year is the perfect time to get rid of old items which no longer serve a purpose in your life. This can be done monthly, quarterly, or even spontaneously! It is a refreshing way of getting rid of old memories and making room for new blessings.
  3. Date yourself – How many of you have been to the cinema alone? I used to think the idea of this was crazy until I done it, and it really wasn’t as bad as I thought. Despite the fact that it was valentine’s day and I was watching 50 shades of grey alone…the act of doing a traditionally social activity alone was quite liberating and gave me more confidence to actively “date myself”. So why not try doing more outings alone, eating alone, going for lone walks, or anything!!  Spending alone time is a great way for you to get in tune with your inner thoughts.
  4. Have fun – This is so important for us as adults as we often get caught up in this rollercoaster we call life. Taking time out to just do things we enjoy is essential as it reminds us that life is to be lived and fun is just as an important part of the journey.

There are so many other changes you can make to your everyday life that will allow you to create more balance in your life. Download a free JC Wellness E-book for more tips which include meditation, and breathing techniques.
